So you’ve finally figured out the baby room logistics: which room in the house, what kind of crib, perhaps even the pattern of the window drapes.  However, there’s one very important decision you have yet to make: the color of the walls!  Should you go the traditional blue-or-pink route, or be creative with some earthy tones? Does the color even matter? How does it affect your baby?  Luckily, there have been studies done on color, and we’re here to give you the 411.  Some common wall colors are below with information about the kind of emotions they may project and other fun facts that will help you pick up a paint brush and get to work in no time!

Blue

  • tranquil, soothing, placid, relaxing
  • may encourage trustworthiness and dependability
  • brings down heart rate
  • helps babies with respiratory distress syndrome

Pink

  • calming, sweet, innocent
  • symbolizes youth, kindness, and gentleness
  • may heal sadness
  • encourages personal introspection

Purple

  • the color of royalty, so it’s uplifting
  • encourages emotional strength
  • associated with spirituality
  • provokes aestheticism
  • may assist with calming a baby with colic
  • may help with more peaceful slumber for baby
  • soothes the body, especially the eyes and nervous system

Yellow

  • provokes positive thinking
  • helps with energy
  • stimulates the mind and memory
  • can encourage communication and other forms of expression
  • some research shows that more babies cried in yellow-painted rooms
  • couples argue more in yellow kitchens

Green

  • the most refreshing color
  • easy on the eyes
  • creates a sense of security in the room
  • positive for infants with gastroesophageal reflux syndrome
  • makes eyesight stronger

Red

  • exciting, energetic, enthusiatic
  • promotes confidence
  • associated with energizing organs and the five sense
  • usually better as an accenting color since it is so strong
  • may impend on a person’s ability to concentrate

Brown

  • sparks a sense of stability
  • natural, organic, wholeness
  • provides a feeling of protection and order
