Date nights are important, even when you and your significant other have been together for years – make that, especially when you have been together for years!  Having time set aside to focus on one another allows you to reconnect and remember the reasons why you got together in the first place.  Even for the most dedicated date-nighters though, alone time can be more challenging once you have a baby.  Not to worry; your one-on-one time is not over.  A little creativity can go a long way to solving this problem.

Of course, there is always the babysitter option, but many new parents are reluctant to leave their new baby with someone else.  On top of that, the cost of paying a sitter and going out on the town can really add up.  Fortunately, many typical date night activities can be re-worked for staying in.

Movie Night: If your usual date night consisted of going to the movies, why not rent a movie or two?  You can even choose theme nights – action/adventure one week, comedy the next, artsy the week after that.  You don’t have to stop there though.  Make it the full theatre experience.  Pick up all of the fixings for an amazing plate of nachos, some popcorn and special seasonings or any other treat you love to share.

Gourmet Meal: When fancy dinners out are your regular style, try making a special meal at home.  Cook (or pick up) something special that you don’t normally have.  Grab a nice bottle of wine or another special drink.  Once your little one is down for the night have a late night candlelit dinner.  Make sure the table is set nicely and leave the dishes for morning.

Picnic: If romantic picnics are more your style then try bringing the picnic indoors.  Prepare finger food and pack it up in containers and a basket.  Again, wait until your baby is asleep and then lay out a cozy blanket in the living room and settle in for an intimate picnic.  If you have a yard and a baby monitor, you can even take the picnic outdoors under the stars.
